I must admit that after reading through this I have considered dropping Buddhism for the Catholicism that moved my heart in my youth. Don't let the new atheists sway you into disbelief. This book showcases the deep knowledge and sharp mind of Pope Benedict XVI and also highlights the deep faith he has in Jesus Christ. This book is a must read even if you have to buy it new. Thank God for Pope Benedict. He takes us on a journey from Christ's Baptism through his Transfiguration and weaves together evidence from the Old Testament as well as that of modern scholarship that casts light on who Jesus was and is today. All in all this is an enlightening read that has the power to move one to deeper faith or possibly even to conversion.
While he kept most things on a theological level that an average layman like me could understand, Pope Benedict also managed to pack almost every sentence with amazing insightfulness. I'll admit up front that I am not Roman Catholic. But before you roll your eyes, let me say that this is one of the most inspirational books I've ever read regarding Jesus Christ.
It breaks down the book into small essays with simple outlines. It definitely cannot replace the book, but helps you guide discussions and provides thoughtful questions. If you are interested in doing a small-group study based on this book, I recommend the companion study guide. I would urge believers and non-believers, Catholics and Protestants, to get this book and enjoy an amazing look at the life of Jesus.
I usually devour a book like this quickly. I can hardly wait for volume two. In fact, I am an evangelical Southern Baptist. This is the first part of what the author plans as a two-volume set.
But I found myself constantly pausing, pondering what I just read. It covers the first part of His adult life, from His baptism to His transformation. get the main points and move on.

But the pretense that this somehow relies on historical New Testament scholarship is patently dishonest. And his claim to discover Trinitarian Christology explicit in the words of Jesus is nothing more than apologetics.Nobody is saying the Pope can't write a book about Catholic theology for Catholics. Joseph Ratzinger claims to being at least partially reliant on historical New Testament scholarship, and then goes on to simply ignore the consensus that has emerged from the last century of that scholarship.One simply cannot defend the historicity of the Gospel accounts of Jesus' acts and words and say one is relying on historical scholarship. His heavy reliance on the historicity of the Gospel of John is a clear signal that he is pointedly ignoring mainstream scholarship.
